Excellent SBD from the best night of the first Uptown run. Short but sweet first set, clocking in at a mere 45 minutes-- although the audio is missing the Sunrise between the Cassidy and Sugaree. Still that would make it a mere 50 mins, instead. Surprising Sugaree to close it out, and then a Samson to open the second that just cooks. As doug_the_dude notes (in a review on another stream), "Set 2's heart is really in all that jam following Drums (they were edging their way into "the formula" around this time), drawn way out into a totally discordant Other One - awesome, awesome Dead."

Additional notes: JJarnow's mini-tweet review on 1 Feb 18 pointed this out: "with this show, i think this becomes the 1st 3-night run where garcia doesn't repeat any songs. geeks come at me?" also, in "weir watch" he points out: "on AROUND & AROUND encore, he starts d-d-doing a roger daltrey-like stutter, one step closer to '80s/'90s form." Finally, he posts a pic of Latvala's notebook entry for this show. He notes, "this show warranted a steal your face sticker (what dick called 'the thunderskull'), indicating extra tastiness." Wrote Latvala: "This is definitely what one would call a tight, very hot show! (In the tradition of 5/7/78 [sic], 5/8/77, 1/22/78, 1/13/78, 12/29/77, 11/4-6/77, 6/4/77, 6/8/77, 2/26/77.......)

I agree with Doug, njpg, and everybody else. This is a very good show. But what helps tremendously is that this is a great board, which can make or break collectibility. And yes, capn doubledose, Jerry's voice is shot - basically through most of the year. But tonight, he 's tolerable. God knows I've heard a whole lot worse. I really wasn't expecting anything out of February because of Jerry's laryngitis, but this show was a complete surprise. I wouldn't say it's X Factor, but it's certainly very collectible as a solid four stars... maybe sneaking into 4 1/2.

A broken water pipe closed down the Uptown Theatre back in the early 80's. The gem is still there waiting to be restored and I hope she is! I would love to see a show there!
This is a real solid show and it would have been grate to have been there. It's not a super long show but it more than makes up for it with energy!

First off everyone on board singin at the conclusion of Jack Straw makes it one of the best one's I've heard.

This recording does have a few rough spots but overall very sweet,,, The Around x2 is a spicy hot encore. Not even a tune i even usually pay any mind but it is all Chuck Berry and Donna and Bob go ape on the lyrics,,, Weir does that stutter delivery which messes with my head,,,

Although maybe not as brilliant as the previous night, this show has moments that are truly spectacular. One of the most remarkable things is that the vocal harmonies, Donna's voice included, are positively angelic throughout the 2nd set, and the He's Gone thru Wharf Rat--however excellent the instrumental work--is even better vocally. The drummers are having a brilliant night as well, and Weir is shining on rhythm. While I've heard better, this one is without question a keeper.

77, 78 are like bread and butter, it doesn't get much better.

The sound is very nice and Jerry is really pushing the envelope from jack straw on...a minor flub in he's gone doesn't dampen the mood.

The night before may have more interesting setlists but this whole uptown run just sizzles, and I actually like them more than the more celebrated shows a few nights later in the month.

The boys always did seem to put together fine shows in the mid west during that era. I only had the priveledge of seeing later mid west shows at Deer Creek and Alpine Valley, but this run at the Uptown is fine indeed. I agree, Sugaree.....After 250 plus shows from Englishtown on Labor Day 1977 to Spectrum shows in 1995, words cannot express how much the shows, and the whole experience is missed. Thank God for archives as it keeps this 47 year old busy and in a good mood everyday !!

Other one has a great jam and the whole show is very solid - but like alot of '78's Garcia's voice is shot.

Very crisp recording. Some of the best vocal performances you will hear in 1978 (the acapella in He's Gone is fantastic; and a powerful ensemble sing in "Roses").

Garcia is on, but not quite the Beethoven he reels off in the shows to come (2-3 and 2-5).

My download resulted in He's Gone dissolving into Drums, with a tapping out of notes that is a couple shy of the Close Encounter theme. Drums is short; a few minutes in, Phil takes a solo.

Out of this we get get a interesting, energetic, tight little jam. Appears the band didn't need much of a break this night. Halfway through, Garcia switches over to a wah'd sound.

At 6:24 he whips out a neat little theme that feels like he's going somewhere 1-22. Then suddenly around 7:19, everyone drops out, and it's a Phil solo again. Then drums; is it Dancin'?

And away they go, whirling dervishly into The Other One.

At 9 minutes it scatters into a spacey jam with Jerry again noodling vaguely around that 1-22-style stuff, but it's into Wharf Rat...

Only streaming through computer speakers at the moment, but the piano is way too prominent for my taste. Like a persistant mosquito, just when I relax a bit, it comes back to annoy. Vocals sound a bit distant, but certainly a good performance. Nice Cassidy and Sugaree(there's that damn piano again)and the drummers are really on! Definately worth a listen. Not sure about downloading. 4 ana half stars for performance/2 stars for tinkling ivories, but decide for yourself.

For as old as this show is, it has such a clear sound. The vocals are impressively clear. The dead mixed it up really well in this show.

Yes, this is a good sounding show, and the Jack Straw makes me prance in my undies.

However, the first part of Estimated Prophet is missing, and Wharf Rat has a nasty cut in the lyrics. Just a heads up.

all the elements that make a show work. The sound quality is surperb. Set II with something for everyone. Very nic.

The show is awesome. I used to listen to this tape often in college (class of 85). Problem was the tape was copied so many times that Jerry sounded like a chipmunk.

This recording is perfect, the song mix is delightful, and the band is on all the way through. They play off each other in the nicewst of ways. The show brought goose bumps to my skin and tears to my eyes. And yes that Suger Mag is one of my absolute favorites. It lifts the soul.

This is an undercirculated, underrated classic-type show on a crispy soundboard. 2/1/78 capped off a great Uptown Theater run. Along with the surrounding shows (1/22/78 through the Dicks Picks 18 shows just following this one), it represents a pinnacle of sorts for the Dead and the end of an era.

Set 1 is solid. A couple spectacular highlights are provided by a crisp, ripping Jack Straw opener and a short but explosive Sugaree. The Set 2 jam that runs from Estimated through Sugar Mag sparkles end to end, with each song being among the best versions I've ever heard. High points: the free jam out of Drums, Wharf Rat's effortless coalescence of a out of a melty space, and my personal favorite Sugar Magnolia. It starts out slow but funky, chugging along, gathering momentum, then exploding into a vicious, psycho-Jerry rock-and-roll jam which begs you to play it loud.

The vocals are spot-on throughout this show (even Donna!) and the sound quality is fabulous -- as Jerry whips out distorted licks, one can get a feel what it was like in the theater that night as some of the room amibience seeps into the soundboard.
